Legal Case in ECHR

Equal Love application to the European Court of Human Rights

Background information

The Equal Love campaign is seeking to repeal the twin legal bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships.

In February 2011, the Equal Love campaign filed an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, in a bid to end sexual orientation discrimination in marriage and partnership law. We have also organised an Equal Love petition, meetings with the Equality Minister and the lobbying of MPs and political parties.

In response to our pressure and to the appeal lodged with the European Court of Human Rights, the Prime Minister announced in October 2011 that the government would legalise same-sex marriages before the next election. However, the government has, so far, ruled out the legalisation of opposite-sex civil partnerships.

Our bid for full equality will continue. Please support our efforts.
